In Episode 3, we delve deeply into the misinformation and disinformation being spread about African foreign nationals. By using fact-checking resources like Africa Check and data from government departments that are in the public domain, we are able to dispel many of the common untruths that drive distrust and resentment among South Africans. The myths we uncover and debunk include claims that African foreign nationals “steal” jobs from South Africans and are responsible for the high crime rates in our country.
This episode serves as a reminder that our country’s unemployment crisis and high crime rates are not caused by African migrants or refugees, who only make up 4% of our population. Instead, these issues are clearly due to the government’s significant failings. Problems such as loadshedding, massive looting, and the corruption of state-owned enterprises like Transnet have exacerbated poverty and inequality, bringing economic progress to a grinding halt.
Season 4 is a lesson in how people in power scapegoat and create division among communities to retain power. The divide and conquer strategy is alive and well in South Africa. As usual, Riaad injects humour to lighten the mood and expose the absurdity of fake news.
