FREE FOOD KITCHEN

Free Food Kitchen is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that began with a simple but powerful intention: to serve the Cape Flats’ communities through yoga and connection. But very quickly, a deeper and more urgent need revealed itself — people were hungry. For many, there wasn’t even one meal a day.

What started as a single container kitchen has, over five years, grown into a network of seven community kitchens across the Cape Flats, collectively serving over 400,000 meals and counting. Supported by corporate CSI funding, private donors, public contributions, and volunteers, Free Food Kitchen has become a vital lifeline, evident especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, when food insecurity reached critical levels.

As a content creation studio specialising in authentic and emotive purpose-led storytelling, Iron Heart was commissioned to produce a documentary-style content film that could showcase the organisation’s impact to existing donors and potential funders. The film captures a real day in the life of the kitchen, from wholesome meals being prepared (lentil curry, rice, vegetables, and donated fruit), to children, adults, and elders queuing for what is often their only meal of the day.

We chose Executive Director Theresa Mvinjelwa as the narrator — not just for her leadership, but because she is deeply embedded in the work, on the ground, every day. Alongside feeding programmes, the organisation also runs yoga classes, community libraries, vegetable gardens, and even The Divine Dog and Cat Kitchen, feeding animals in vulnerable communities.

Shot on location in Lavender Hill by Peter Harper, this film is an unfiltered, human portrait of resilience, dignity, and community care. It’s not just a story about food. It’s a story about nourishment in every sense of the word.
