JUMPSTART FOUNDATION BRAND FILM

The JumpStart Foundation is a non-profit organisation working in underserved schools across five provinces in South Africa, implementing its NumberSense programme — a fun, practical and engaging approach to foundational mathematics that helps children truly understand numbers, not just memorise them.

Alongside its maths curriculum, JumpStart supports teachers in the classroom and runs a youth development programme through Educator Assistants (EAs), creating both improved learning outcomes and real pathways into employment. Through its JumpTrak M&E platform, learner progress is tracked in real time — offering measurable insight into impact at scale. In doing so, the organisation tackles two of South Africa’s biggest challenges head-on: maths literacy and youth unemployment.

JumpStart partnered with Iron Heart to create a brand film and video production piece that could bring this impact to life — not just through reporting, but through real stories and lived experience.

The brief was clear: tell this story in a way that feels authentic — showing the real people, the real work, and the real impact.

We open on real voices — children speaking about their dreams for the future. There’s optimism, ambition, belief.

But that hope exists alongside a harder truth. In a country facing extremely high youth unemployment, and a rapidly changing digital world, the path to that future is anything but guaranteed.

So we shift from possibility to action. We contrast this with the role JumpStart plays — equipping children with the foundational maths skills they need to navigate uncertainty, think critically, and step into opportunity with confidence.

Filmed on location in Limpopo, across Sekhukhune District and Tzaneen, the production required a rapid pivot just days before shooting due to severe flooding in the region. Working closely with the JumpStart team, we adapted and captured the programme as it exists: resilient, responsive, and deeply embedded in the communities it serves.

The film reflects the full ecosystem of the programme, including the Educator Assistants — many of whom begin as young people seeking opportunity and go on to build careers in education themselves. It’s a cycle of impact: learners gaining critical thinking skills for life, and classrooms becoming catalysts for change.

At its core, this is a film with heart and soul. A story told through real classrooms, real learners, teachers and EAs — capturing moments of curiosity, confidence and connection, all grounded in a clear sense of purpose. This brand film is designed not just to inform, but to move.

Because when you can see and feel the impact, you understand it.
And when you understand it, you’re far more likely to invest in it.

The film forms the heart of an integrated campaign, supported by social media, a targeted LinkedIn rollout and PR — all designed to showcase the programme and connect JumpStart with funders and partners who can help scale its impact across South Africa.
